The Biggest Give-Away Yet - Thank You Readers and my Personal Learning Network!

Omg - Really - I have the Best of Friends & Supportive Readers!

*scroll all the way down to enter the give-away*

Many of my teacher friends often do give-aways to honor and thank their loyal readers.  Though my subscriber number reaches well over 1,000, I've been planning on doing a give-away once my Google Friend Connect number reached 1,000.

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting many of my virtual friends face to face in San Diego at the International Society for Technology in Education Conference.  I can't begin to explain what an amazing experience this conference was for those who attended.  I would like to reinforce the positive influence of social networking.  Thanks to Twitter, I connected with so many of my dear friends over lunch, group discussions, dinners, and parties.  Because of social networking and the opportunities to connect at conferences and workshops, I've made some incredible friends.

I reached out to these amazing friends this past weekend to see if they would be interested in contributing to this give-away.  I sit speechless as I write this due to the overwhelming number of responses... wow!  Thank you to everyone who supports the work we all share through our blogs and social networks.  I can't begin to put into words how generous you all are and how truly thankful I am for your kindness.

Drum Roll.... and the give-away items are....

I've organized the gifts into three categories:

  • Autographed Books: a few of my friends who are authors have generously donated a signed copy of their book - I personally have a copy of these and simply love each book!
  • Software and Web Memberships:  some amazing companies have really been supportive and offered some fantastic resources - you won't believe how cool they are!
  • Teachers Pay Teachers Items: tons of teachers have donated some of their best selling and most creative lessons, units, and activities from their personal stores!
Thank you to each of my dear friends below that donated one of your personal products!

Autographed Books:

(per Amazon): In The Book Whisperer, Miller takes us inside her sixth grade classroom to reveal the secrets of her powerful but unusual instructional approach. Rejecting book reports, comprehension worksheets, and other aspects of conventional instruction, Miller embraces giving students an individual choice in what they read, combined with a program for independent reading. She also focuses on building a classroom library of high-interest books, and above all on modeling appropriate and authentic reading behaviors. Her zeal for reading is infectious and inspiring, and the results speak for themselves. No matter how far behind Miller's students may be when they start out, they end up reading an average of forty books per year, achieving high scores on standardized tests, and internalizing a love for reading that lasts long after they've left her class.Travel alongside the author as she leads her students to discover the ample rewards of reading and literature. Brought to life with Miller's passionate voice, The Book Whisperer will help teachers support students of all levels on their path to reading success. This book also includes a dynamite list of recommended "kid lit" to help parents and teachers find the books that students really like to read.

(per Maria Dismondy's site): Sami’s perfect life falls apart when the new girl moves in next door. Sami doesn’t need another friend, she has Stella. They are the perfect example of best friends. Mittens come in pairs and so do friends, according to Sami.

Bullying can be very subtle, but it hurts just the same. Three can be a tricky number with friends because most of the time, someone gets left out. Follow Sami as she discovers how to keep her best friend and find room for one more in Pink Tiara Cookies for Three.

(coming soon!) Amazing Grades: 101 Best Ways to Improve Your Grades Faster by Pat Wyman, M.A., et al.

Pat Wyman is also the author of  Instant Learning for Amazing Grades, Learning vs. Testing, and co-author on two books about autism.  She is a university instructor of continuing education and frequent media guest.

Graphic Organizers for Reading by Laura Candler has dozens of ready-to-use folded and flat graphic organizers, but it's far more than a collection of printables. Instead, it's a massive, comprehensive guide to transforming teaching and learning with graphic organizers! You'll find a chapter on how to create effective mini-lessons and three chapters of graphic designed for specific purposes. Each graphic organizer includes teaching tips and suggestions for using it effectively.

As Reading Specialist Sue Roberts wrote,"Very few resources give teachers tips on how to explicitly model strategies. Even in my graduate program for reading, the instructors told us what were good research based strategies, but they didn't SHOW us how to do them. You have done an excellent job at providing the best resources along with explicit suggestions for modeling. You give teachers exactly what they need to deliver these mini-lessons effectively!"

(per Amazon): by Alan Sitomer  The Nerd Girls are back. And though they seek to leave behind all the drama with the popular girls, the ThreePees feel they have a score to settle with the Nerds and will stop at nothing to do so. Fed up with the perpetual infighting, the school principal insists that if the two groups want to continue to “compete” with one another, they will do so in a productive manner and thus forces all six girls, Nerd Girls and ThreePees, to participate in the Academic Septhalon. But Maureen has family troubles. And issues of self-esteem. And a desire to bury her head in the sand and pretend that all of the very real issues she’s facing as a kid who is now growing up are not really happening to her.

Are cupcakes, a sarcastic sense of humor and a hope that it will all “just go away” on its own enough to get Maureen through eighth grade? Will Beanpole wake up and smell the coffee? Will Alice really be able to cure herself of the allergies that plague her? It’s A Catastrophe of Nerdish Proportions, a fast-paced, funny, foray back into the lives of the three nerds we got to know and love in Nerd Girls Book I: The Rise of the Dorkasaurus.

Author, Steve Reifman, is letting the winner of this give-away select from Chase Against Time or Changing Kids' Lives One Quote at at Time.  The book will be sent in a compatible format for your e-reader with a personal email from Steve!

Recently released by Brown Books Chase Against Time puts fifth grade hero Chase Manning up against all odds, as he tries to recover a prized cello in time to save Apple Valley's music program.  Chase faces numerous twists, turns, and surprises along the way as the mystery develops, all within one day.

(per Barnes & Noble) Wrinkles Wallace: Knights of Night School by Marquin Parks Follow the zany adventures of Wrinkles Wallace and his classmates who have to come together as a team to outsmart their teacher and pass 5th Grade. After all, they’ve failed it a number of times--so many that Wrinkles is already 28-years old.

The students deal with real-world issues and themselves in order to overcome the antics of their diabolical teacher, Mr. Sittin’ B. Quiet. (By the way, he’s only ten.) Join them in this upside-down world where non-stop humor serves as a guide to character-building and success.

(per Heinemann website): Troy Hicks holds sight on good writing workshop instruction. Where others have talked about new technologies and how they change writing, Hicks shows you how to use new technologies to enhance the teaching of writing you already do. Chapters are organized around the familiar principles of the writing workshop: student choice, active revision, studying author’s craft, publication beyond the classroom, and assessment of both product and process. In each chapter you’ll learn how to expand and improve your teaching by smartly incorporating new technologies like wikis, blogs, and other forms of multimedia. Throughout, you’ll find reference to resources readily available to you and your class online. He also includes a practical set of lessons for how to use wikis to explore a key concept in digital writing: copyright.

New literacies are developing around us at what sometimes seems like the speed of light. It’s hard to keep it all in focus. Let Troy Hicks guide you through the complexities of what it all means for your classroom so your students’ writing can grow right in step with our changing times and technologies.

To the best of his abilities he has done this in his twenty-four years as a high school science teacher. He received the Presidential Award for Excellence for Math and Science Teaching in 2002 and was named Semi-Finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year in 2010.

He serves on the advisory board of TED Education. He is currently the Lead Technology Facilitator for the Joseph Sears School in Kenilworth, Illinois. He is the father of three teenagers and is happily married to the love of his life.

(per Clement's site): Red, White, and Blue by Debbie Clement My newest book, is a traditional, 32 page picture book based on the song I wrote immediately after 9-11. I've made all of the illustrations from fabric as small quilts.  There are many patriotic images with graphic flags for each repetition of the words: red, white, and blue in the song's lyrics.

From the flag image we move on to the purple majestic mountains followed by geographically diverse western red-rock mountains.  Then on to the family farm and small village followed by the big city and an image of the fire trucks at House 10 (the fire station across the street from the Twin Towers).

(per Amazon): From Scholastic author, Joan Young: Sing a song of sight words! With this super collection of songs on CD and mini-books, kids get lots of practice in reading and writing 35 key sight words. Each song—sung to a familiar tune—features one or more sight words and comes with a fill-in-the-blank mini-book that provides multiple opportunities to write each targeted word. After completing the mini-book, children can read along as they sing the song again and again. A super way to build sight word recognition, boost reading fluency, and reinforce spelling. For use with Grades K–2.

25.  Onomatopoeia, Simile, and Metaphor Skit

Instead of asking my students to do a worksheet over similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeia, I asked them to do a mini-project. This project involves the students getting into groups of 3 and assuming the roles of Simile, Metaphor, and Onomatopoeia. Each group was responsible for creating a short skit using these 3 characters. The catch? Each character's name dictates how that character can speak! For instance, Simile can only speak in similes, and Metaphor can only speak in Metaphors. Students can write about whichever topic they wish, so long as they stay within the guidelines.

This product is 2 pages long and contains a complete set of instructions for the students and a rubric for grading purposes.

31.  My Five Senses:

I had so much fun making this product for my own classroom! I am very thrilled that this unit comes with Science Investigation Mats that will help children learn to set up their own investigations independently. Research indicates that children need repeated experiences in order to further their understandings in the concepts you introduce and teach them. This unit definitely promotes hands-on, inquiry based instruction that is developmentally appropriate for a young budding scientist. Materials used in the unit are from common household materials that are safe for children to investigate and explore with and easy to find.

48.  3D Shape Monster:

This is a book I read to my students when we are learning about the 3D shapes sphere, cone, cylinder & cube. It's a simple & repetitive story that the kids pick up on quickly. It also helps kids understand the difference between flat shapes (square, circle, rectangle & triangle) and 3D shapes. If you are a preschool teacher and only teach basic shapes you can leave the 3D shapes pages out and the story still makes sense. Update: I have added a black and white reproducible copy of the book.

51.  Goin' Buggy: Fluency Phrases for All 600 Fry Words:

According to Dr. Timothy Rasinski, the words in these phrases come from Dr. Edward Fry's Instant Word List (High Frequency Words). According to Fry, the first 300 words in the list represent about 67% of all the words students encounter in their reading.

These cards use all 600 Fry words. I did not create the phrases - I simply turned them into a classroom tool. You will notice a number on each card. This is to help you keep sets organized within your classroom.

I use these as an alternative to sight word cards in my classroom. I also use them in a whole group class game called BANG!

I've included data tracking sheets and instructions and materials for 6 additional sight word/phrase games.
