A Penny CAN Change the World

Friend and asset to the education community, Adam Bellow, is the author of EduTecher - a free site for teachers!  Last year, Adam started a campaign for Change the World.  Each click = 1 cent donated.  Please enjoy the brief video below to see more about how: one click = one vote which is 1 cent donated to a charity.  You can select the charity of your choice.  The charity with the most clicks will receive the funds.  This year, two super-supporters, Richard Byrne and Andrew Schwab have committed to matching the total donations penny to penny.  How generous! So, what are you waiting for... support a charity and click here!

The second year of the eduTechers Change the World campaign was a huge success with 47,893 visitors clicking on the penny and helping to make a difference.  What will this year bring?

Unlimited Music For Your School with Musicshake

New this year is an online tool Musicshake which will provide your students with an opportunity to create and share unlimited music that is copyright free.  This is a fantastic tool for students, and will help children with all levels of musical experience, even those with none at all.  Aspiring musicians can create and retouch content, while students with little to no musicality can simply find a song they like and use it or add effects.

Creating and giving presentations is something that often can provide significant angst for both children and adults.  First, you have to determine what you want to present.  Next, you have to come up with the actual presentation and create content.  And then, you typically will work on formatting, music, video, animation.  In the meantime, the student is possibly worried about stage fright, presenting in front of peers, or finding content.  Spending a lot of time finding the right music, or trying to work around copyrights can be an added burden that affects their end product.  Musicshake makes finding the right music to add to your presentations easy, fun and affordable.  The annual fee for a school is currently listed at $499.00, which allows unlimited music making access for all students for one year.  Here is a look at this great tool in action.

About Musicshake

Musicshake meets the CLRN’s (California Learning Resources Network) review criteria, and is approved for social content.

Musicshake is the proud of sponsor of YMCA's nation-wide Arts Week after school program (Y’s Artsweek)

Crafty Holiday Project for Classrooms

This past weekend, my family and I went to Santa's Workshop.  The afternoon was enjoyable as kids were able to have lunch together, meet elves, decorate cookies, participate in storytime, and create crafty projects.  One craft that my son, Jacob, who is three, really enjoyed was making an ornament for our tree.

The steps are simple and the project could be a messy free and creative idea for students:

Step 1:  loop and tie your fuzzy stick through the hole you've pre-punched in a juice can lid

Step 2:  Pick out your favorite holiday stickers or photos to design the juice lid

Step 3:  design the other side with a sticker or photo to create a double-sided ornament

Step 4:  show off your cute craft

Turn your Site into an App for Mobile Devices

Allow your audience to browse your site with ease: transform it into an App with Conduit!

I was super excited to find out about this service from Conduit.  I was even more surprised to find that it was absolutely free to do!  So, of course, I had to try it out with Kleinspiration.  You can click here to download, for free, this site to continue to get cool tech tools and tips along with freebies and give-aways for your classroom.  Please note that my screenshots aren't good... I was in a rush to get the process completed; so, I didn't format my images correctly.  Now, I'm wishing I would have.  I'm hearing that voice in my head "anything worth doing..."

Simply scan in the QR Code with your Smartphone or iPad to get Kleinspiration on your mobile device.  You can get a free QR Code scanner by clicking here.  Then, open up your app, take a picture of the QR Code, and you will be connected to the Kleinspiration Mobile Site on your device!

*Please click here to read my other post about using QR Codes and seeing a tutorial*

Regardless of my poor homepage screenshots, look how cool Kleinspiration looks on my iPad:

The bottom buttons allow you to read the news on Kleinspiration, my recent Facebook posts, or my personal Twitter feed.  Tech at your fingerTips - I love it!

Transforming your site into an app takes only minutes!

(below is an example I did for another site I contribute to, Teaching Blog Addict)

Step 1: click the image below and enter your site's url

Step 2:  add your pages

(I just added the Twitter page by selecting the plus sign by the Twitter icon - then entered the Twitter name I wanted below... in this case @teachingblogadd)

Step 3:  click Publish

Step 4:  enter your information

(hint: keep your new url short:  for example, instead of doing 'teachingblogaddict' I did TBA)

Step 5:  Promote your Page via your Social Networks

Step 6: OPTIONAL: Get your Apple Certificate

For $99, you can belong to the App Store.  I went ahead and did this for a year.  I am hoping the bang is worth the buck... we shall see?  My hope is that by being in the App Store, I'll get more traffic.  I will let you know how it goes.  I'd also love any feeback you can offer.  Have you tried this?  How is it going for your app?  Thanks bunches!!

My 2 new Teacher Tech Finds

As a teacher (and a blogger), I'm often bringing work home to finish.  In our home office, I have a beautiful desk; however, my desktop computer is fairly old and runs slow.  So, I rarely use my office.

My husband and I have been waiting to get a new computer until we found the 'just right' one for our needs.  We finally ordered a new computer last night.

Now we can both use a computer at the same time!  We each have an iPhone and we have the new iPad 2, so we aren't ever without web access... it's more of the lack of being able to create documents or projects that usually hindered one of us.  I've been using my laptop in the living room while sitting on our sofa.  I love the comfort of not being at a desk.  So, I went searching for the perfect new 'desk' to house our new computer.

After searching for a while, I am happy to share my new finds: the Turner Lift Top Coffee Table and the HP TouchSmart.  Because of our new finds, we are redesigning our home office.  I'm so excited!  I'll post a few before and after photos when our new shipments arrive.  You can get your coffee table desk for $149 by clicking here.

Having a comfortable space to work in is so important.  I don't want to feel like I'm working (even though I have to) while I'm at home.  So, by removing our desk, painting a warm color on the walls, adding a comfortable sofa, and finding the 'just right desk,' I'm confident that we will enjoy our new home office.

Keep in mind, we didn't get a bonus check... we're simply redesigning our living room and pulling items from our garage and basement to make this functional transition happen on a budget... as HGTV would say... 'design on a dime.'  The only two new items we've purchased are the coffee table desk and the computer.  Be sure to watch the computer demo video below... so cool.  I can't wait until it arrives!  You can build your own HP Smarttouch by clicking here.  I must admit, I cross-compared each model and finally determined that the 420t was the best bet for our family.

I also really like this commercial for the HP Touchsmart:

Give-Away: Ron Clark's The End of Molasses Classes: Getting our Kids Unstuck

What we're giving away?

novel: The End of Molasses Classes by Ron Clark

What is it?

Author, Ron Clark, is such an amazing inspiration to teachers everywhere.  You might know him from his movie starting Matthew Perry, The Ron Clark Story, his appearance on Oprah, or being named as Disney's Teacher of the Year.  Clark recently opened up his own school, The Ron Clark Academy in Georgia.  Clark has captured his tools for success (not in fame but in teaching) into a terrific new book: The End of Molasses Classes: Getting our Kids Unstuck 101 Extraordinary Solutions for Parents and Teachers.

For me, reading this book could be described as a movement towards grounding my personal philosophy of education.  I consider myself a 'teaching spaz.'  When the doors to my classroom are closed, I become quite a different person... rather a child.  Thus, Clark's story really speaks to me.  I understand how some may be taken back by his extreme enthusiasm; but for me, perhaps it's the x-cheerldeader or debate and thespian in me... I really relate to his style.  I'm not at full energy every day... but I try to be - I see the difference in the kids!

My hero's in education are:  Alfie Kohn, Daniel Pink, Sir Ken Robinson, Dr. Spencer Kagan, Maria Montessori, and Ron Clark.  I enjoy an active student-centered classroom where the learning and teaching is shaped daily by the children.  We are organized, structured, spontaneous, caring, messy, and a family.  Everything we are... we aren't.  There is routine; however, each day is a new adventure.  Expectations are clear, yet learning transpires through natural discussion based on our experiences and own fascination.  The children take ownership of their lessons as I'm simply their guide.  We follow the standards, but incorporate our own interests.
Clark helped me to learn how to do this.

In a time where 'there isn't much time' to fit it all in... Clark helps remind us what is truly important in education.  I'm a firm believer that if we build community first, there will be more time in the long run for academics.  There isn't really a better way to explain it than to just open the pages and begin... The End of Molasses Classes is a no excuse read on how to rise above, have values, build relationships, and become an active player is shaping our future as the vessles of our practice.

I believe many teachers hold these principles true.  My wish is that the leaders and shakers in our profession did, too.  I'm hearing more and more of friends participating in 'school of choice.'  I even know people who, like Clark, are opening their own school.  What an amazing journey!  The common thread I'm finding is that people are doing this so that they can follow their hopes and dreams for teaching how they feel is 'right.'  They aren't following trends of high dollars and upscale environments.  They're following trends where there is a place that supports and cultivates a love for the child.  Teachers are moving to teach in buildings where there isn't more pay... but more opportunity to be creative, be involved, and actually teach!  I know this to be true from personal connections that I've shared with others and witnessed myself.  Frankly, I think it's amazing!  I just wish that all teachers had the opportunity to teach for the love of teaching in a place (building, district, state) that supported those methods... where class sizes were small and resources were available.  We don't need the best of technology, new books, or nice furniture.  We need a space that is not overcrowded and a culture that is trusting of teacher creativity and supportive of quality professional development.

Whoa... off my soapbox and back to the give-away...

Just to show you how super cool Ron is... here is a personal video he made for the authors of Teaching Blog Addict, the community teaching site I also blog for.  Click Here to become a follower.

Give-Away: Closer to Nature Bottles to Introduce Tommee Tippee's new, free digital storybook: The Day Baby was Born

What we're giving away?

a set of Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles

What is it?

Tommee Tippee contacted me to introduce their new web application, a free digital storybook:  The Day Baby Was Born™  This is a simple way to capture moments of pregnancy and the birth day through the gathering of Facebook posts, a selection of birthday news and facts and the collection precious memories through a pregnancy journal. Whether you’re bronzing babies first shoes, saving the front page of the newspaper or, buying out the craft store for scrapbooks – capturing memories go hand and hand with motherhood. In fact, it comes before baby even arrives.

Because my target demographic reaches women between 25-45, I thought this digital storybook may be of interest to my readers - and it's free... so why not share it, right?  I asked if they could include a product for a give-away, and they offered a set of their premium baby bottles.

This is an educational blog that highlights the use of technology integration.
I'm sharing this post with the teachers that may benefit from this new, free innovative web application for their personal lives.  It's always great to have fun with technology, even when on maternity leave.  :)

About the Novel
(text taken from Amazon.com)

My name is Michael Vey, and the story I’m about to tell you is strange. Very strange. It’s my story.
To everyone at Meridian High School, Michael Vey is an ordinary fourteen-year-old. In fact, the only thing that seems to set him apart is the fact that he has Tourette’s syndrome. But Michael is anything but ordinary.
Michael has special powers. Electric powers.

Michael thinks he's unique until he discovers that a cheerleader named Taylor also has special powers. With the help of Michael’s friend, Ostin, the three of them set out to discover how Michael and Taylor ended up this way, but their investigation brings them to the attention of a powerful group who wants to control the electric children – and through them the world. Michael will have to rely on his wits, powers, and friends if he’s to survive.

Give-Away: $25 Gift Certificate for Blog2Print

What we're giving away?

$25 gift certificate to the web company: Blog2Print

What is it?

You can turn your blog into a book!  This is super easy and looks quite professional.

I turned my blog into a book to use for my professional portfolio.  I used it on my recent interview.

This is the cover I selected.  You get to choose your cover design and images.

I ended up having a few pages for the Table of Contents.  I love this feature!

This is an example of two of my pages.

I really like how the website automatically enters and formats everything for you.  All I had to do was select the type of blog I had (Blogger, Wordpress, etc..) and enter the dates that I wanted the book to cover.  After the website generated the preview, I was able to pick out my colors and images for the cover.
It's truly nice to have my digital work transformed into a tangible book to have.

...sparked an idea for my digital family scrapbook...

When the book arrived, I was so impressed with the quality of the product that I started a blog for my family.  This way, I can make blog books throughout the year and keep nice, professional, keepsakes of my family.  I love that I can have a hardcover book that is affordable - and on the inside, I have nice, typed writing, beautiful images of my family, and my personal narration to accompany each post (with the date!).  It's so nice!!  I always have time to do a quick blog post - but little time to scrapbook... so this works!  Plus, I can order multiple copies of the book for relatives and gifts.  When we take vacations, I'll just make a bunch of blog posts from our trip.  When it's time to create the book of our vacation, I'll simply select the date range of the blog posts I'd like the site to generate.

It's that easy!

*Disclaimer: I am an affiliate for Blog2Print*
This simply means that if you connect to their site from mine, and decide to purchase, I'll get a small portion of revenue from the company for referring business.  Thanks!!
