Storyline Online brings you The Polar Express & my Writing Unit on TpT!

StorylineOnline hosts The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
read by Lou Diamond Phillips

I blogged about this great site back in January, and I thought it would be a perfect time to re-introduce this free website to you again, considering they have one of my favorite holiday stories featured.

StorylineOnline.net is a program of the Screen Actors Guild.  The site has free interactive stories for you to view from your class projector/screen, IWB, or class computer.  There are so many popular stories to choose from such as: The Rainbow Fish, Stellaluna, A Bad Case of Stripes, and more!  Once you select a story, you're able to view the length of the interactive reading, a story summary, and who the celebrity is that will be reading your book.

You'll enjoy these free online books as the actors do a great job with really animating the dialogue.  My second graders really enjoy practicing their reader's voice after enjoying these stories.  I also like that there is an option for 'captions on or off.'  I think it's great to keep them on so that students see the words and the connections between sentences.  Just seeing the text and conventions exposes them to good writing while hearing a great story, read fluently.  It's a great tool for showing students how to read with intonation because they understand quite simply that - that is just what good readers do... no one feels silly about reading with expression.  Instead, it's the norm - hence, comprehension enhances as students are actively engaged in their reading while thinking about the story.

Did I mention that the illustrations come alive?
You must check out The Rainbow Fish - see it how you've never viewed it before!
